Jordan Spieth makes Masters history that no one wants at Augusta National

Jordan Spieth, once upon a time, was a rising superstar on the PGA Tour. He had just won his first major title at the age of 21, becoming the youngest ever winner of The Masters.

Friday morning, Spieth made some new history at Augusta National. Unfortunately, it is one he would prefer not be associated with.

Spieth made a quadruple bogey nine on the par-5 15th. In doing so, he became the first player in the last 20 years to record multiple nine’s or worse at 15, according to The Athletic’s Justin Ray.

He previously carded that number in the first round of the 2021 Masters.

After a solid tee shot and second shot, his approach flew the green. He faced a treacherous chip back down the severely sloped green.

Spieth caught his the ball thin and watched as the ball rolled past the hole and down into the water.

After taking his drop, he once again flew the green into almost the same exact location as before. This time, he took the wedge out of his hands and three-putted for the quad nine.

The three-time major champion had hopes of getting into red figures when he woke up to finish his first round. Instead, he carded a 7-over 79 and is 14 shots back of Bryson DeChambeau.

For years, Spieth was the most consistent player at Augusta.

He recorded a T2, 1, T2, T11 and 3rd place finish from 2014 through 2018.

But in recent years, his visit to Georgia has been far more tumultuous. He finished T21 in 2019, tied for 46th the following year before finishing third again in 2021. He missed the cut entirely last year and is on his way to missing it again this year.
