A 45-year-old N.J. diner is proposed to be demolished and replaced with a Chipotle

New Jersey’s diner count continues to dwindle as plans to demolish yet another Garden State diner are progressing.

Medport Diner of Medford is proposed to be demolished to make way for a Chipotle Mexican Grill.

The 45-year-old diner is located at 122 Route 70.

An application to the township’s Zoning Board of Adjustment proposes the diner be demolished and replaced by “an approximately 13,905 square foot multi-tenant retail shopping center.”

The application is on the agenda for the board’s Feb. 21 meeting.

The proposed shopping center would include a Chipotle with a Chipotlane — a pick-up only window.

A traditional drive-thru window, where customers can order and receive food, would not be permitted in the space due to its close proximity to a nearby Popeyes drive-thru.

If the proposal is approved, Medport Diner will join the likes of other former New Jersey diners, like the Red Lion Diner in Southampton (2023); Empire Diner in Parsippany (2023); Cherry Hill Diner in Cherry Hill (2023); Marlton Diner in Marlton (2022); Mastoris Diner in Bordentown (2022) Penn Queen Diner in Pennsauken (2017) and Sage Diner in Mount Laurel (2017).
