Cash aid, transit housing for Sri Sabah flats fire victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Five families who lost their homes in Sunday’s fire at the Sri Sabah flats in Cheras will be given transit houses by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the victims can move into the transit houses in the Sri Johor flats from Wednesday (Feb 14).

“For those who have purchased our housing, they can stay at the transit unit for six months while those who are renting can stay up to three years,” she said when met at the temporary transit centre for the fire victims at SK Sri Cheras here on Tuesday (Feb 13).

Dr Zaliha added that the five affected families will be receiving cash assistance of RM7,300 each from the Federal Territories Department (RM5,000), DBKL (RM1,000), Bandar Tun Razak parliamentary office (RM1,000) and Social Welfare Department (RM300).

The families will also be given essential items such as rice cookers, toiletries, sanitary products and other daily necessities, she added.

She also said DBKL will help repair all the residential units affected by the fire.

Earlier, Dr Zaliha was accompanied by Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, Kuala Lumpur mayor Kamarulzaman Mat Saleh, Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai and Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department director Muhammad Salleh Abdul to meet the displaced families and visited units damaged by the fire.

Six units on the 17th floor of Block 70 of the flats were destroyed in the fire which was believed to have originated from the electrical distribution board wiring of one unit.

A total of 16 residents involving five families lost their homes and three were placed at the transit centre for the time being.
