Apple Watch users are facing ghost touch problem: what is it, how to fix

Many Apple Watch users are currently facing a weird issue called the ‘Ghost touch’ problem. Though there is nothing related to the paranormal here, many users on the internet are reporting that they are experiencing a frustrating issue of false touch, wherein the device behaves as though its screen is being tapped, even when it’s not. This often leads to unintended actions, menu navigation, and even accidental passcode entries.Â

The problem of false touch in Apple Watches was first acknowledged by Apple in a memo circulated to Authorised Service Providers in February, in which it was said to be primarily affecting Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 models. Apple even told the service providers that there is no need to replace the units and instead advised users to wait for a software update with a fix. But now many users are complaining that they are experiencing the false touch issue in other models as well, including the Apple Watch Series 7, Apple Watch Series 8, and the original Apple Watch Ultra.

While the exact cause remains unknown, some Apple Watch users have jokingly attributed the issue to paranormal activity, thus the nickname “ghost touch.” The problem can be so severe that it renders the Apple Watch unusable. One Reddit user described their experience: “I’d had my Ultra 2 for just over two months. Yesterday evening, my watch went haywire. Ghost touches were happening constantly, and the screen glitched like it had a power problem. After it locked me out by randomly tapping numbers on its own, I put it on the charger.”

This issue has prompted significant concern amongst affected Apple Watch users, who find their devices practically unusable due to erratic responses and screen glitches.

How to fix this issue? 

Well, Apple is working on the problem and has yet to release a permanent fix. However, there is a temporary fix that seems to address the issue. In response to this problem, Apple has advised users to perform a force restart on their devices by simultaneously holding down the Digital Crown and side button for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Additionally, users are urged to ensure their watches are running on the latest watchOS version, as software updates may offer some relief from the ghost touch phenomenon.

While Apple is investigating the root cause of this problem, It is anticipated that a fix may be included in the upcoming watchOS 10.4 update. In the meantime, keeping your watch software updated and performing a force restart when necessary can help manage the issue. You can also ensure your watch screen stays clean by regularly wiping it with a soft, lint-free cloth. This helps prevent dirt or moisture from interfering with touch sensitivity.
