Apple to introduce its new Macbook Air with powerful M4 chip but with almost no design changes
Apple is gearing up to introduce the new MacBook Air featuring its highly anticipated M4 chip in the spring of 2025. While this new iteration promises enhanced performance and improved AI capabilities, the tech giant reportedly plans to keep the design of its popular MacBook Air line largely unchanged.
Although Apple is rumoured to release a new iPad Pro with the M4 chip in May, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that this strategic move will allow the tech giant to later focus its shift to iOS 18 with AI features at their WWDC 2024 in June without the iPad launch overshadowing it. While the iPad Pro is expected in May, the M4 chip’s arrival in Macs is likely around fall 2024, with the MacBook Air’s debut set for spring 2025.
New MacBook Air with powerful M4 chip
According to reports, the upcoming MacBook Air models will leverage the new M4 chip and will prioritise artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, aligning with the anticipated AI features in upcoming software updates across Apple’s platforms. This focus on AI is likely to translate to a Neural Engine with more cores, building upon the 16-core Neural Engine found in the current M3 chip.
Additionally, the M4 will utilise Apple’s 3-nanometer process, mirroring the M3. This means the performance leap between M3 and M4 may not be as substantial as the jump from M2 to M3, given the lack of a change in node size. Nevertheless, users can expect a noticeable performance boost in everyday tasks and more demanding applications.
No Major Changes Expected in Design
Apple revamped the MacBook Air’s design in 2022, introducing a modernised look that featured a flat, MacBook Pro-style body with a Force Touch trackpad and a notched display. The 2025 refresh is unlikely to introduce further aesthetic alterations, as Apple tends to roll out major design changes every few years.
Hence, users can expect the same 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch size options as the current MacBook Air models, ensuring a familiar form factor for those accustomed to the existing design. By keeping the design consistent, Apple is likely aiming to maintain the appeal and usability of the MacBook Air series, which has been widely successful in recent years.
