Welcome to the United On My Mind daily round-up, where we take a look at some of the best Manchester United stories which you might have missed.
It’s been a whirlwind few days for Manchester United supporters, who’ve been on a rollercoaster of emotions since the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job is safe for now, It hasn’t stopped people speculating over his position as Antonio Conte continues to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Paul Pogba is also being linked with a move away, whilst Erling Haaland rejected a move to United for Borussia Dortmund.
Antonio Conte says ‘yes’ to Manchester United
It’s the name that keeps on cropping up as pressure has built on Solskjaer in the last few days.
Antonio Conte is out of work and the MEN understands that the Italian would be open to joining United if there was a managerial change. However, it’s believed that some people at the club have reservations about him becoming the new head coach.
In Italy, there’s an update from Gazzetta Dello Sport , who come up with reasons why the former Inter Milan boss is now saying yes to an offer from United.
The report lists all the big names that Conte wants to manage, including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane, Alex Telles, Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.
Gazzetta adds that the Premier League has ‘always fascinated’ Conte, and the ‘charm’ of Old Trafford attracts the manager’s return to English football.
Rating: Antonio Conte is certainly at the top of some people’s list if Solskjaer is sacked at Old Trafford. He seems like the favourite, so watch this space. Personally, I think United need to go for a more long-term option.
United prepared to let Pogba leave for free in summer
There’s been plenty of talk in recent weeks around the ongoing future of Paul Pogba at Manchester United. Some supporters think he should stay, whilst others think he should leave.
A report from ESPN has claimed that United have decided to let Paul Pogba run his contract down this season and let him leave for free in the summer, rather than try to get any transfer fee for him in January.
Pogba is out of contract next summer and the report has suggested that United have accepted that he won’t be signing a new deal at the club.
United have calculated that he will be worth more to them remaining at Old Trafford in the second half of the season, rather than any fee he would generate in January.
Rating: Pogba’s contract is still a weird one. I expect him to leave if United continue their downward trajectory, but if there’s a change in manager, then he might stay. They’ll be more twists and turns in this, that’s for sure!
Haaland rejected ‘better offer’ from Manchester United
I’m sure every fan in the world wants Erling Haaland at their football club and if you remember, United were very close to signing him in the 2019/20 season.
United put in an offer to Haaland’s former club, RB Salzburg, but the Norwegian favoured a move to Germany instead of coming to England.
Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has claimed United’s offer to sign Haaland was superior to their proposal.
“Our offer wasn’t the best. The offer from Manchester United was better. However, agent Mino Raiola has recognised that Erling is in better hands with us,” Watzke told OMR Podcast, relayed by Spox.
“People notice that gifted people make the breakthrough the quickest with us. That is a powerful argument for the players, their parents and advisors.
“When we discovered the players on our own is long gone, but we will get them. We have no inhibitions about letting 17-year-olds play.”
Rating: I wished United signed Haaland, but it just shows that younger players are now favouring moves to the Bundesliga before coming to England. I hope United get him someday.
