Antiques Roadshow guest stunned at whopping value of racing driver Lewis Hamilton's old helmet and overalls gifted to him after he was flown by helicopter to meet sports star

An Antiques Roadshow guest was stunned to learn the value of some of Lewis Hamilton’s old gear during Sunday’s episode of the show.

The man brought a helmet and overalls worn and signed by the racing driver, as well as a VIP pass for a corporate event.

He explained how in 2008 he’d spotted a competition to enter to meet sportsman Lewis, now 38, but the guest’s father entered for him as he was too young to meet the age requirements at the time.

His father won and the prize involved joining a group of other winners at television show Top Gear’s race track where they got the chance to race with Lewis in the driving seat.

The guest explained: ‘When it all happened in 2008 that was the first season I started watching and I have never stopped.

‘I asked my dad to enter a competition because I wasn’t old enough to enter at the time and it just so happened that he won.

‘You were flown by helicopter to where they filmed Top Gear and got to meet Lewis Hamilton.’

The show’s expert Hilary Kay asked him what it was like meeting Lewis – who came second in the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday – with the guest describing the star as ‘very chatty’ and welcoming of his father.

Moving onto the value of the items, Hilary said: ‘Even though this isn’t a race overall it is the real thing, he did wear it while he was driving.

‘Obviously the value isn’t going to be as high as if it was a race overall.

‘But I still think the two together and the VIP pass, all signed, will be around £10,000.’

Open-mouthed, the guest responded: ‘Wow. Yeah, that’s a lot more than I was expecting.’

Hilary said: ‘The great thing is, your dad has passed his enthusiasm on to you.

‘You are going to look after this collection and hopefully you are going to add to it.’

The guest replied: ‘I would hope so. It would be nice to get the opportunity to.

‘But I’ll definitely keep a hold of this for the foreseeable future and hopefully add to it.’
