In a solid performance that secured his first season victory, Cleveland Guardians pitcher Ben Lively held the Los Angeles Angels to a single run over six innings this Saturday. Despite the Angels’ efforts, Lively’s five strikeouts and limited allowance of just four hits and three walks helped the Guardians clinch the win.
Angels manager Ron Washington acknowledged Lively’s effectiveness in clutch moments, despite not being overly impressed with his overall arsenal. “I didn’t think (Lively’s stuff) was that good,” he said. “But he was able to make some pitches when he had to. He shot some fastballs inside on us. He threw some good changeups. He was able to minimize any damage that we could do.”
The Angels’ offensive woes were compounded by a lackluster start from pitcher Reid Detmers, who surrendered three runs in the first five innings, including two home runs.
The situation deteriorated in the sixth inning when Detmers loaded the bases with walks, setting the stage for Bo Naylor. Despite Naylor’s previous struggles against left-handed pitchers, he capitalized on a misplaced curveball from Detmers, driving it out of the park for a grand slam.
Detmers expressed his frustration postgame, emphasizing the need for better execution and looking ahead to his next start as a chance for redemption. He plans to work through the issues in the bullpen, aiming to bounce back in his upcoming appearance on the mound.
