Luzon placed under red alert for four hours

MANILA, Philippines —National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Luzon grid under red alert today, April 23, for four hours.

In its latest advisory, NGCP said a red alert is up in the Luzon grid from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The grid operator placed the region under yellow alert between those periods or from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to 12 midnight.

NGCP said a red alert is raised when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement. It can lead to power interruptions.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement although it does not necessarily lead to power interruptions.

NGCP said the available capacity in Luzon is 12,832 megawatts while demand is seen to peak at 12,671 MW.

According to NGCP, portions of La Union, Tarlac, and Camarines Sur experienced automatic load dropping wherein power was cut in certain areas due to low power supply. It was restored after 15 minutes.

It said power supply is unavailable in parts of Isabela and Pampanga as manual load dropping (MLD) or rotating power interruptions hit these provinces.
