Andre Onana questions Man Utd transfer

andre onana questions man utd transfer

Andre Onana, Man Utd

Andre Onana has admitted he questioned his transfer to Manchester United last summer after struggling to adapt during his first few months at the club.

The 28-year-old was signed for €50 million from Inter to replace long-term shot stopper David de Gea, however Onana endured a series of high-profile mistakes in his early appearances for United.

Onana faced strong criticism after his mistakes which caused him to doubt his choice to join the club, particularly due to the rainy weather in Manchester, however the Cameroonian insisted he is now ‘100% sure’ of his decision.

Barcelona agree to sell error-prone star to Man Utd

“It was really hard,” he told MUTV. “But it’s the first time I faced such a situation. Now I know the league, I know the people, I know the country, I know Manchester – okay, Rainchester!

“When I look back now, I’m just smiling because it was a big lesson for me. But in the beginning I was like, ‘Wow, did I make the right choice?’

“But I’m definitely 100% sure I made the right choice because Manchester United is the bigger club in this country, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. Who would say no to come to play for this beautiful club?”

Onana bouncing back after difficult start

Onana’s biggest blunders came in the Champions League where he conceded 15 goals in six games, leading to United finishing bottom of their group and suffering a humiliating early exit.

However, the ex-Ajax keeper faired better in the Premier League and has since stepped up his performances, with United having the fifth-best defence in the division and Onana also picking up eight clean sheets.

United have also struggled to contain shots from opponents this season and only one goalkeeper has made more than Onana’s 131 saves in the Premier League.

“It has been a difficult season,” Onana continued. “If you put everything on the table, you can speak about a lot of things, like injuries, players, about bad luck. But we are Manchester United, we are such a big club, so we cannot talk about that.

“We have to stay positive. The game last week is gone. [Be] positive, and if the season is not the best one, I’m sure the coming one will be better.”
