Andre De Grasse opens with 2 wins, and Sarah Mitton shows out in Suzhou | Athletics North
Andre De Grasse opens his outdoor season with two wins in Jacksonville. But first it. Athletics N recap, We’re going to take you to Suzhou China and the second Diamond League meet of the season, Sarah Mitten, who’s had a brilliant winter taking the world indoor title in Glasgow to back up the silver medal from Budapest last summer. On her first throw, Sarah Mitten launches the shot put 19.86 meters, which is good enough for 2nd place behind World champion Chase Feely of the USA but ahead of Olympic champ from China Gang Li Zhao who took the West last week. Round two in China for Canadian steeplechaser Regan Yee had her place 9th overall in a time of 9 minutes 26.12 seconds, lowering her time from the previous week by 5.35 seconds and ever closer to that nine minute 23 second Olympic standard. Speaking of Olympic standards, it was sad news for two time Olympic long distance runner Natasha Wodak, who after a 15 month journey to run under the marathon automatic Olympic entry standard of two hours 26 minutes and 50 seconds. Failed to do so in her final attempt at the Hamburg marathon this past weekend in Germany. Fellow marathoner Ben Prisner will make one last push to an Olympic spot on Sunday in the Copenhagen marathon. Andre Degrasse opened his outdoor season at the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, FL with a wind aided 20.11 seconds in the 200m, and the next day clocked a wind legal 10.11 seconds in the 100m, just ahead of Olympic champion Marcel Jacobs of Italy. Island Hopping over to the Bermuda Grand Prix, fellow sprinter Aaron Brown clocked 100 meters in a wind, aided 10.09 seconds to take second place behind world champion Noah Lyles, who ran a blistering 9.96 seconds. Both Degrass Brown and Team Canada will face Lyles and Team USA in the World Athletics Relays this coming weekend in Bahamas. Athletics N will be there covering all the action, so stay tuned to CBC Sports.
