Anders Beyer scandal costs the Bergen International Festival almost NOK 5 million

A scandal surrounding festival director Anders Beyer led to the board hiring both a law firm and a PR agency.

Bergen International Festival, known as Festspillene, is one of Scandinavia’s most important music, culture, and art festivals.

Beyer was director of the festival since 2012. But late last month, the festival board concluded that Beyer had abused his position as festival director, in an attempt to “achieve a private relationship in a manner that was insulting to the offended individual.”

As a result, he was let go immediately. However, he received both severance pay and had his legal expenses covered by the Festival.

Together with severance pay for the former director, the expenses for legal assistance and help with media management have cost the Festival almost NOK 5 million, according to Bergens Tidende.

“The accusations were of such a serious nature that the board quickly decided to have it investigated by an independent third party,” wrote board chair Thorhild Widvey in an email to the newspaper.

The law firm Hjort conducted an investigation and assisted the board in the case. The law firm Arntzen de Besche also provided legal advice, while the PR agency Corporate Communications was hired to help with media management.
