indian navy embraces kurta pyjama as dress code in messes: report

New Delhi: The Indian Navy has introduced Kurta-Pyamas attire in the naval messes, claims a media report. The move is based on the government’s directives to shed imprints of the “colonial era” and to promote “indianisation”.

According to a report published in The Times of India, the Indian Navy has allowed its officers to wear ethnic attire with sleeveless jackets. The officers are also reportedly allowed to wear formal shoes or sandals along with the Indian attire in the mess.

As per the report, the decision to adopt kurta-pyjamas was taken after discussions during the naval commanders’ conference which was chaired by Admiral R Hari Kumar. As per the order accessed by TOI, there are strict guidelines about the colour, cut and shape of the kurta-pyjama.

Retired Indian Army Officer’s tweet:

A kurta must have a “solid tone” with the length just up to the knee. It should have cuffs at the sleeves with buttons or cuff-links. Meanwhile, the narrow pyjama must have a “contrasting tone” and should be in line with trousers having side pockets.

A “matching pocket square” can also be used in the sleeveless and straight-cut waistcoat or jacket, reported the media house. Similar instructions have also been issued for women officers for wearing “kurta-churidaar” or “kurta-palazzo”.

However, former Navy Chief Admiral (retd) Arun Prakash called it “unnecessary” and in “poor taste”

Notably, reports also surfaced that the Indian Navy is working on “Indianisation” of the ranks for sailors.

Admiral (R) Arun Prakash’s tweet:

Meanwhile, Naval officers’ uniforms with epaulettes highlight the “heritage and legacy” of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The practice of officers carrying batons has also been stopped.
