Gauteng to take action to achieve 90% matric pass rate target

Gauteng’s Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, spoke on the 85.4% matric pass rate, that marked a 1% increase from 2022.

This year, KwaZulu-Natal surpassed Gauteng with an 86.4% pass rate, securing the second position.

Chiloane and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi honored the top achievers at a celebratory event in Bryanston, awarding bursaries.

Chiloane expressed a commitment to intensify efforts for improved results in 2024.

GAUTENG MEC CALLS FOR STRONGER EFFORTS FOR MATRIC PASS RATE

The province plans to address underperforming schools, engaging with 34 institutions scoring below 65%, up from 53 the previous year. A focused approach will be implemented to tackle the challenges faced by these schools.

Premier Lesufi pledged performance bonuses to district directors achieving over 90% in their regions. However, he criticized MEC Chiloane for falling short of his target by 5%.

At the matric awards ceremony hosted by Microsoft in Bryanston, high-performing learners received vouchers, bursaries, and laptops. Lesufi emphasized the exceptional achievement of districts, highlighting only two meeting the 90% target.

Gauteng’s Technical Report revealed that in the past five years, only three districts had surpassed a 90% pass rate. Lesufi applauded the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal for outperforming Gauteng.

Despite Chiloane disputing the figures and emphasizing the 1% improvement, Lesufi insisted on the need to strive for a 90% pass rate. He allocated only 3 out of 10 points to the achievement, emphasizing the need for increased efforts.

Lesufi acknowledged the stiff competition, urging Gauteng to wake up to the reality of increased challenges. He announced immediate performance bonuses for districts achieving above 90%, reinforcing the commitment to rewarding excellence.

In concluding his address, Lesufi acknowledged the hard work of those surpassing the 90% mark, reinforcing the province’s dedication to reaching the set target.
