Amruta Khanvilkar is currently riding on the success of her new web series, Lootere, which is streaming on Disney+Hotstar. The series is helmed by Jai Mehta, and the showrunner is none other than Hansal Mehta. In Lootere, director Mehta explores new territory both in location and genre. The show ventures into the darker aspects of ship hijacking, set against the backdrop of Somalia. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, Amruta opened up about how she became a part of the show, the USP, shooting experience in South Africa, and much more!

Talking about how Amruta became a part of Lootere, she told Zoom, “Maine Mukesh Chhabra ji ke pass koi dusre audition ke liye gayi thi. Aur mujhe pata chala ki Hansal Mehta ki koi international series ke liye casting chal raha hai. South Africa mein shooting hone wali hai. I was like, mujhe audition karni hai Hansal Mehta ke project ke liye kuch bhi karke. I have asked Mukesh, and he said, Ek hi mother ke role hai. Maine audition kiya, Mukesh ko bohot achchha laga. So it’s like maine chhin liya tha ye role. Maine choose nahi kiya maine chhin liya tha.”
Revealing the USP of the show, Amruta said, “It’s a world; we haven’t heard of it. Pirates of the Caribbean dekha tha maine, but aisa kuch hota hai mujhe nahi pata tha. Aj iske bare mein mujhe kaafi kuch paata hai. Toh aisa ek world create karna jo bohot realistic ho, hijacking a ship ke barein mein ho, pirates ke bare mein ho, I’d not have thought of being a part of it. But hote hai na makers, captain of the ship ko pata hota hai. Jis tareeke se unlog ne socha ki Indian actors nahii, African actors ko bhi leke ate hai. Their whole agenda was to create this world of pirates. I think that was really something, and being a part of that was sone pe sohaga.”
Amruta also opened up about the shooting experience in South Africa and said, “Shooting in SA after COVID was challenging. India ko leke poore world mein situation kharab tha. Hum Aisa bhi kiye 10–10 din hotel mein stalled hote the. Then, having the patience to sit in a room without meeting anyone was difficult. We were in that loop of quarantine. That time was really challenging for us. Aap jab pardes chale jate ho tab aapke desh ka importance pata chal jata hai.”
Amruta further added, “Humko 24 ghante ki shooting permission milti thi, and we used to shoot for 24 hours. Kabhi kabhi curfew lag jata tha because Omicron aya tha. Raat ko shooting karte the and subah, we used to rush back to the hotel. That was very difficult.”
We asked Amruta, How do you mentally prepare for such roles, and do you find it challenging to switch off from the character after filming? To this, Amruta said, “As actors, jab aapko koi aisa kirdar milta hai, there’s always a switch on and switch off, and as Amruta, you can’t get bothered by that; you’ve got to come out of it. Then craft ke uppar kaam karte hai. I think kahin na kahin such roles pitch you to have an upper hand in your craft.”
