Das gelingt nur drei Schweizern von sieben im zweiten Lauf. Der schnellste ist Loïc Meillard, der sechs Plätze gut macht und Siebter wird. Luca Aerni fährt auf Rang 13.

Als Erster der Schweizer scheitert Noel von Grünigen beim Versuch, zum dritten Mal in seiner Karriere Weltcuppunkte zu holen. Nach schnellem Start fädelt der Sohn des zweifachen Riesenslalomweltmeisters Michael von Grünigen ein. Ebenso wie Sandro Simonet, 22. nach dem ersten Lauf. Und Daniel Yule, Sieger beim letzten Slalom hier vor zwei Jahren. Mit Platz 20 hat auch er nicht sonderlich gute Aussichten auf einen Spitzenrang, den er zuletzt in Wengen holte, wo er Zweiter wurde. Es ist ein kleiner Rückschlag in einem Winter, der bislang deutlich besser verlief für den Walliser als der letzte.

Er kommt auch mit diesem 2. Lauf in Kitzbühel nicht zurecht. Erst verpasst er ein Tor, steigt zurück, fährt weiter – und rutscht bei einer Kuppe doch wieder weg. Da nützt auch nichts, hat er sich mit tiefem Brummen im Starthaus eingestimmt auf diese Herausforderung. Kurz: Es ist nicht der Tag der Schweizer.
Ganz im Gegensatz zum Mann ganz vorne. Dave Ryding gewinnt als erster Brite ein Weltcuprennen. 35 musste er dafür werden. Die Norweger Lucas Braathen – Sensationssieger von Wengen – und Henrik Kristoffersen komplettieren das Podest.
Er lernte Skifahren auf Plastikmatten
Der Schnee, die Berge sind weit weg, als sich der Brite als Sechsjähriger erstmals auf den Latten versucht. Er tut das auf Plastikmatten, ausgelegt auf winzigen Erhebungen. Die Umgebung im kleinen Resort des Pendle Ski Clubs ist trist, die Hügel braun. Kein Hauch von Winterzauber. Wenigstens hatte der kleine Dave Ryding diesen etwas in der heimischen Stube. Kaum von der Schule gekommen, sass er vor den Fernseher, fieberte mit Biathleten mit, mit Skispringern, Langläufern und Skifahrern, während er daneben die Hausaufgaben erledigte.
Einer hatte es ihm besonders angetan: Alain Baxter, Brite wie er, und an die Weltspitze des Slaloms vorgestossen, als Ryding in die Pubertät kam. «Er hat mich inspiriert», sagt Ryding. Er begann selber zu träumen, in einer Schulstunde habe er aus dem Fenster geschaut, so erzählt er es, und sich gesagt: «Irgendwann will auch ich zu den besten 30 Skifahrern der Welt gehören.»
Fast zwei Jahrzehnte später sitzt jubelt dieser Dave Ryding in Kitzbühel. Einst verblüffte ein Landsmann von ihm die Skiwelt: Konrad Bartelski, der in der Abfahrt von Gröden 1981 Zweiter wurde, was den französischen Fernsehkommentator dazu veranlasste, ins Mikrofon zu schreien: «Ce n’est pas possible! C’est un Anglais!» Das ist nicht möglich! Das ist ein Engländer!
Erst belächelt
Auch 41 Jahre danach staunt die Skiwelt noch, wenn es einer von der Insel weit nach vorne schafft. Zu Beginn seiner Karriere, im Dezember 2009, gab er sein Debüt auf oberster Stufe, habe er ein paar Athleten gesehen, die ihn belächelt hätten. Nun tut das definitiv keiner mehr.
Seit er mit 13 Jahren sein erstes Rennen auf Schnee fuhr, ist er Schritt für Schritt professioneller geworden. Im Winter lebt er mittlerweile in Österreich, im Sommer trainiert er oft in Saas-Fee.
Längst ist er auch nicht mehr auf das Geld seiner Familie, vor allem das seiner Grosseltern, angewiesen, die zu Beginn die Auslagen trugen. Später waren es Gönner aus seinem Heimatdorf Bretherton, zwischen Blackpool und Blackburn gelegen.
