The usually mild-mannered BAFTAs were a spiky affair this year – even if some have dubbed it the most woke awards ever.

The politically charged ceremony threw out plenty of shade from the stars.

Like normal, the host divided opinion – just like the winners as films finest were honoured at the glitzy bash.

Rebel Wilson got lots of laughs along the way and there were plenty of pot shots fired.

There was awkwardness at the Royal Albert Hall as well as applause it what what had to be the most barbed awards ceremony BAFTA has even put on.

Here's the best of the brutal digs from an entertaining night.

Rebel's royal bashing

It was probably a good job Prince William swerved the ceremony this year.

Rebel went in on his uncle Prince Andrew, who has of course recently paid off his alleged sex accuser Virginia Giuffre, bringing to an end her legal action that has left his reputation in tatters.

“So, I was going to do a musical number as host, it was about Prince Andrew though um…” she waded in. “Listen guys, no it’s not what you think, it was on roller-skates, it’s called Pizza Express.

“But don’t worry I’m not going to do it, I’m not going to sing, I’m saving my voice for the sequel to Cats.”

Witch way for Emma Watson

Was Emma Watson's remark aimed at JK Rowling? ( Image: James Veysey/REX/Shutterstock for BAFTA)

Emma Watson appeared to have a pop at Harry Potter author JK Rowling – and fans loved it.

While it was not known if her comments were directed towards Rowling's controversial transgender views, it was seen by many as a nod to the community.

The actress, 31, who played the iconic Hermione Grainger in the film adaptions of Rowling's best-selling books, took to the stage to present the award of Best Outstanding British Film at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday.

As Rebel, 42, welcomed Emma to the stage, the Australian quipped: “Here to present the next award is Emma Watson. She calls herself a feminist, but we all know she’s a witch.”

Emma swiftly replied: “I’m here for ALL the witches.”

Putting the boot into Putin

When you book Rebel Wilson, don't expect her to hold back.

When there's a war going on, you should probably be surprised if she doesn't go in heavy.

The actress said: “In this performance there are two different interpreters one is signing America Sign Language and one is signing British Sign Language.

“Luckily though, in all sign languages this is the gesture for Putin” – before putting her middle finger up for the camera.

Winner Will can't escape

Will and Jada were glad they weren't there despite his win

He wasn't there, but Will Smith didn't dodge a poke.

Will won Leading Actor for his performance as Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard.

He was elsewhere and in his absence, his affair drama with wife Jada Pinkett Smith didn't go unmentioned.

Following his Bafta win, Rebel said on stage: “Personally I thought his best performance in the past year has been being ok with all of his wife’s boyfriends.”

Where's Meghan's award!

Meghan Markle probably didn't expect to escape a dig or two.

Rebel took aim at the ex Suits star and Prince Harry as she made fun of her explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“Our next package is for Outstanding British Film from drama to horror, to fantasy… Harry and Meghan's interview with Oprah had it all,” she joked.

“Unfortunately that's not nominated in this category but some incredible films are.”
