Alan Shearer issued an apology to Match of the Day viewers as they tuned in to watch coverage of the FA Cup clash between Manchester City and Burnley on Saturday afternoon (March 18). The sporting legend had refused to appear on last weekend’s show after the BBC asked his co-host Gary Lineker to step down following his criticism of the government’s new migrant policy.
Ian Wright also announced he would not appear on the programme as other pundits also stood in solidarity with Lineker. The show went ahead but was cut to just 20 minutes with no commentary or even the iconic theme tune.
Issuing an apology to viewers, Alan said: “I wanted to say how upset we were that all the audiences missed out on last weekend. It was a really difficult situation for everyone concerned and through no fault of their own some really great people in TV and radio were put in an impossible situation.”
Gary Lineker was back in the studio for the show after the BBC apologised and reinstated him as host. But he sparked concern from viewers as he returned to with a health issue.
More than 200,000 people had signed a petition calling on the BBC to allow Gary Linkeker to return as Match of the Day host. The huge support flooded in in just 12 hours.
