The East Sparta Fire Department and others responded to a gas line fire in the 9000 block of Briggle Avenue SW in Pike Township on Wednesday morning. The fire, reported at 10:54 a.m. was reported to have been brought under control shortly after noon.
PIKE TWP. ‒ The East Sparta Fire Department and other fire crews responded to a gas line fire Wednesday morning that sent a plume of black smoke in the sky that could be seen for miles.
The fire was reported at 10:54 a.m. in the 9000 block of Briggle Avenue SW. Shortly after noon, the department noted on its Facebook page that the gas company was at the scene and the fire was controlled.
No injuries were reported.
“Everyone is going home safe,” the post said.
Canton Township Fire Department, Mineral City Volunteer Fire Department, Erie Valley Fire & Rescue, Mohawk Valley Joint Fire District, Bolivar Fire Department, Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department, Stark County Sheriff’s Office and Tri-Division EMS were at the scene. The Marathon and Columbia Gas companies also responded.
The Sheriff’s Office closed Briggle Avenue SW temporarily between Downing and Ullet streets due to the fire.
The plume of smoke from the fire was seen as far away as Massillon.
