Ahead of G20, Sec 144 clamped in northeast Delhi fearing ‘breach of peace’, public rallies banned

As the national capital buckles up to host G20 events, Delhi Police has clamped Section 144 in the city’s northeast districts, restricting large gatherings and stepping up surveillance, news agency ANI reported.

The order was issued by the deputy commissioner of police, northeast district and prohibits unlawful activities, marches, blocking of roads, passages, any type of procession, agitation, rally, or public meeting by the agitators or public representatives.

Collecting or carrying of brickbats, boulders, acids or any other dangerous fluid, explosive, petrol, substance, soda water bottles or any articles capable of use for causing danger in any form to human life and safety is also prohibited, the order read.

Any person contravening this order shall be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

Due to apprehensions of “breach of peace” and “danger of riot or an affray”, police said they will be closely monitoring any speeches made in public places which can create criminal hatred between communities or hurt their religious feelings.

With India holding the G20 presidency for 2023, the government has planned more than 100 meetings across the country. Delhi will be hosting eight meetings, including the meeting of heads of governments and states in September.

The Group of Twenty (G20) is an inter-governmental forum comprising 19 countries – Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States, and the European Union.
