Aged care vaccine mandate comes into effect tomorrow in NSW

Aged care staff across NSW will no longer be able to go to work from tomorrow unless they’ve had at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

However, the Health Services Union is calling on the government to extend the deadline, saying the already stretched industry won’t cope if they lose nearly 5 per cent of workforce.

The September 17 deadline was set back in June in a bid to stop the deadly virus from tearing through any more aged care facilities.

Of the 271,000 staff across the country, only 95.3 per cent have had their first dose of a vaccine.

But that leaves 4.7 percent, or 12,700 workers, who from tomorrow won’t be able to be rostered on.

In NSW, 96.2 per cent have had their first dose, with a few regions lagging behind including Shoalhaven, Tumut, Griffith, and Albury.

The union has slammed the government’s hardline approach calling for an extension to get more aged care workers “across the line”.

“We can’t afford to lose one person out of aged care because we don’t have enough people working in aged care so it’s not as if the government’s got a back-up workforce if people do leave,” HSU Secretary Gerard Hayes said today.

The deadline is now looming for hospital and health staff to get the jab. In Sydney, 91 per cent have had their first dose of the vaccine and 86 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Those still sitting on the fence have until September 30.

“There is no alternative but to be vaccinated, if you work in the health system you have an obligation… in what is a pandemic, what is a war,” NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said.
