Ayodhya transformation: From backwater town to religious tourism hotspot that could attract 50 million visitors a year

NEW DELHI: The grand opening of the Ram temple in Ayodhya is expected to boost religious tourism, attracting more than 50 million visitors annually, surpassing popular religious destinations like the Golden Temple and Tirupati Temple.

The Ram temple at Ayodhya can “create a meaningfully large economic impact”, according to a report by global brokerage firm Jefferies. The main pilgrimage site, spread over nearly 70 acres, will be equipped to host about a million devotees together. The number of pilgrims is expected to jump to 1-1.5 lakh per day, it said.

Rs 85,000-crore makeover

The town’s Rs 85,000-crore makeover, including a new airport, improved railway station, township, and better road connectivity, is also set to have a multiplier effect, leading to the development of new hotels and other economic activities, said the report.

It further noted that despite existing infrastructural challenges, religious tourism remains the biggest segment in India, with several religious centers attracting 10-30 million visitors every year.

Golden Temple in Amritsar gets an estimated 30-35 million footfalls a year while Tirupati temple sees 25-30 million visits. Globally, Vatican city gets around 9 million tourists every year and Mecca in Saudi Arabia around 20 million.

Boost to GDP

The creation of Ayodhya as a new religious tourist center, with improved connectivity and infrastructure, is expected to have a significant economic impact, said Jefferies.

Tourism is a crucial contributor to India’s GDP, generating $194 billion in FY19 (pre-Covid). It is projected to grow at an 8% CAGR to reach $443 billion by FY33. However, India’s tourism accounts for around 6.8% of its total GDP — much lower than that of most large emerging and developed economies.

The transformation of Ayodhya into a global religious and spiritual tourist destination is expected to serve as a model for boosting tourism in India.

New airport, revamped railway station

The Rs 85,000-crore makeover will turn the ancient city from a quiet town into a bustling tourist hotspot.

Various sectors, including hotels, airlines, hospitality, and travel ancillaries are expected to benefit from the surge in tourism and the resulting economic and religious migration to Ayodhya.

Phase 1 of the new Ayodhya airport has already commenced operations, with a capacity to handle 1 million passengers. By 2025, additional domestic capacity and an international terminal are expected to be operational, capable of handling 6 million flyers.

The railway station’s capacity has been doubled to accommodate 60,000 passengers per day. Furthermore, plans are underway for a 1,200-acre greenfield township and enhanced road connectivity.

Currently, Ayodhya has 17 hotels with 590 rooms. However, there are 73 new hotels in the pipeline, with 40 already under construction. Indian Hotels, Marriott, and Wyndham have already signed deals for hotels, while ITC is exploring opportunities in Ayodhya. Oyo plans to add 1,000 hotel rooms in the town.

A unique destination: Report

Jefferies emphasised that India offers a diverse range of geographical landscapes, cultural heritage sites, and a rich artistic and culinary heritage, making it an attractive global tourist destination. Additionally, India is ranked the 7th most beautiful country by Forbes in 2022, has 42 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and is one of only three countries in the world with both hot and cold deserts. Furthermore, it is ranked 10th in the Medical Tourism Index.

The Ram temple’s inauguration in Ayodhya is expected to unlock India’s tourism potential, capitalising on its unique advantages. The country’s natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance make it an enticing destination for travelers worldwide.
