AFL grand final: Levi Ablett, son of Gary, to head out with Geelong Cats ahead of big game

It’s a sight adoring footy fans seen plenty of over the years: An Ablett heading out onto the ground on grand final day.

But Saturday’s version will be different and even more emotion-filled, with Gary Ablett Jr’s son Levi set to take to the MCG turf in front of 100,000 spectators for the AFL’s biggest occasion.

Levi, 3, will link up with Ablett Jr’s long-time teammate Joel Selwood as Geelong players make their way onto the field ahead of their clash with Sydney, following the path of his dad and his grandfather Gary Sr, who played in a combined eight grand finals between 1989 and 2020.

“His son’s going to run out with me tomorrow, which is pretty special,” Selwood told SEN.

“I think it’s only fair that an Ablett’s performing on grand final day.

“It’s Gaz’s turn to cheer on his little son.

“That will be pretty special for the Ablett family, but also for the Geelong faithful.”

Levi suffers from a rare degenerative disease that Ablett Jr and partner Jordan have previously described as having a “very short life expectancy”.

Earlier this year, Jordan opened up about her love for her son and how he was yet to talk.

“It’s really difficult from a practical point of view but also really difficult just being his mum and not being able to hear his voice or know what he needs,” she said.

“When he gets upset, I have to guess what the problem is.

“It’s also difficult because I’d love to just hear his thoughts, have conversation with my boy and for us to know he understands how much we love him.”

It comes after Levi last month took to the turf at another of his dad’s old stomping grounds at Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium.

Levi and his little sister Grace were pictured playing with footballs and bubbles out on the field.
