Auburn hosted the #11 South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday night and blew the doors off them winning 101-61.
South Carolina is an interesting basketball team as they play slow and take up the entire shot clock on almost every possession. Auburn seemed to have the perfect game plan to take down the Gamecocks. Now of course shooting 12-20 from three will help you beat anybody, but Auburn was ready for this game. Some were worried that Auburn would look past this game as College GameDay will be in town on Saturday when they face off with Kentucky but that was not the case. South Carolina beat Tennessee in Knoxville proving they can beat good teams on the road, but they couldn’t beat Auburn in Neville Arena.
Scoring 100 points on a team is always a goal and the Tigers were able to do that against South Carolina. The walk-ons came into the game with a few minutes left in the game and Jalen Harper brother of former Auburn star point guard Jared Harper made the shot that gave Auburn 101 points. Scoring 101 points clearly meant a lot to this team and the fans so seeing the brother of an all-time Auburn great sink the shot to give Auburn this total was exciting for The Jungle to see.
Coach Bruce Pearl had this to say about the game plan his son Steven put together for the Gamecocks, “I thought Steven Pearl did an amazing job in the scout, he had us really ready to go” Pearl said. “We blitzed them a little bit in the ball screens, we did some things about ball pressure that bothered them, and we weren’t afraid to switch.”
Neville Arena is one of the best home environments in college basketball and it is tough to beat the Auburn Tigers on their home floor.
