Advice from Harvard Health Publishing: What can I do to treat runner’s knee?

“Runner’s knee” is more accurately called patellofemoral pain syndrome, a condition in which there is pain in the front of the knee in the area of the kneecap (patella). It may be due to overuse, abnormal alignment of the kneecap as it glides over the femur (the large bone of the upper leg), or trauma. This condition is relatively common among runners. Treatment options include: • Physical therapy to strengthen muscles around the knees and hips • Application of ice • Pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen (used short-term in the lowest effective doses) • Bracing, taping, or wearing shoe inserts • Surgery – This is rarely offered and only makes sense when there is a structural abnormality that can be remedied by surgery and only after failure of other treatments.
