Cassidy Villeneuve, 25, is the Conservative Party of Canada candidate for the riding of Nipissing-Timiskaming.
Villeneuve was nominated by riding members in North Bay February 10, defeating Steven Trahan who had also put his name forward.
Villeneuve, who is bilingual, was born in Iroquois Falls and educated in North Bay, and has been working in Ottawa. Her work experience includes serving as chief of staff for the Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Safety and working on legislation to reform the bail system, advance the rights of victims of violent crime, and protect law-abiding firearms owners.
She said being in politics has been her goal since early childhood because she felt it was the way she could make changes for her community.
Since she first put her name forward in November she has been reaching out to people across the riding, she said in a telephone interview.
With the nomination, she plans to continue doing that.
“The real work starts now,” she said.
She plans to knock on doors across the riding.
“I want to make sure I have the chance to meet with everyone and make sure they know what the Conservative plan is going into the next election.”
She said people are “struggling to keep up with the cost of living and there’s quite a few measures we will be implementing to make sure we can control inflation, and make sure everyone has a paycheque that allows them to keep up with the cost of living.”
She said the Conservative Party will end the carbon tax.
“It’s very costly. We pay the carbon tax on our food, on our home heating, on our gas, and it’s making life unaffordable for everyone.”
The Conservative Party will also balance the budget, she said, and will be “reallocating spending to where we actually need it.”
She said the Liberal government is “going to spend billions of dollars on confiscating firearms from law-abiding firearm owners. We will be taking that money and redirecting it to the services we need in our communities such as more police officers patrolling our streets and more services for people struggling with mental health and addiction.”
To address inflation “we will cut back government spending which will balance the budget and help get inflation under control so that Canadians are able to buy food again and buy homes in safe neighbourhoods.”
Public safety is “top of mind for everyone I’ve spoken to over the last few months…. We used to live in communities where our children would be free to just go play around in the neighbourhood after school. Now I’m hearing parents saying that living just one kilometre away from their child’s school is too far for them to walk home safely. It’s very concerning and something that absolutely needs to change.”
She said that reforming the bail system is step one to make sure “we keep violent repeat offenders behind bars instead of out on bail.”
She added, “We also have to make sure we’re investing in mental health and addiction services. We don’t have nearly enough of those services across Northern Ontario and it’s a very important service to have if we want to be able to keep our streets safe.”
She said it is important to meet with people so that they can be “sure they have someone who is listening to them and someone who will fight for them in Ottawa.”
