Heeramandi trailer: Sanjay Leela Bhansali takes his audience to a picture-perfect world where even tragedy appears beautiful
After teasing the opulent world of Heeramandi for many months, Netflix finally released the trailer of its upcoming original series by Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Tuesday. The trailer of Heeramandi has everything that one would expect out of a Bhansali film but this time, fans will get much more of it as this is a web series. Heeramandi is set in a world where the ‘tawaifs’ have a ton of power and hold over the ‘nawabs’ who visit them. The show is set in pre-independence India where the slogans of ‘Inquilab’ are starting to gain momentum and even the women living in the palaces of Heeramandi can’t help but participate in the freedom struggle.
Manisha Koirala appears to be playing the head of the palace where women are trained to entice men with their dancing and singing. Sonakshi Sinha appears to be playing the rebel who breaks out and tries to establish her own identity. Aditi Rao Hydari’s character is involved in the freedom struggle and seems to be leading a revolt. Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman and Adhyayan Suman also appear in the trailer.

Heeramandi is an extension of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s trademark style which has been evident in his works like Gangubai Kathiawadi, Padmaavat, and even Devdas. The grand sets of the show, the fineries, and even the dialogues spoken by the characters here are otherworldly, which might get appreciated by fans of the filmmaker.
This is Bhansali’s first web series and at the launch announcement in 2023, when he was asked about being a tough taskmaster on set, he said, “There’s nothing like that. I’m not a task master, it’s the image the media has built upon me that I’m difficult to work with and that I’m temperamental. We just sit over there and find a moment which emerges out of discussion and conversation which means that I use their mind and they use my mind, we all get together and that moment of magic comes to us, which I then take credit for and say that I created the magic.”
Heeramandi premieres on May 1 on Netflix. Bhansali has already announced his next film, Love and War, starring Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal.
