Jose Mourinho 'learning German' and wants the Bayern Munich job

Jose Mourinho has his eye on replacing the under-pressure Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich and is ‘already learning German’, according to reports.

The Bavarians gave a woeful performance against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday night, losing 3-0 to goals from Josip Stanisic – who is actually on loan from Bayern – and wing-backs Alex Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong.

Leverkusen created a plethora of chances and racked up eight shots on target, whereas Bayern only mustered one shot on target despite having 61 per cent possession.

Questions have been asked of Tuchel for much of the season, with the team’s laboured style of play coupled with some curious selection decisions putting him under further pressure.

With the side now five points adrift in the Bundesliga title race, an early elimination from the Champions League – where they have been drawn against Lazio in the last 16 – could prove fatal.

Now it appears that Mourinho is waiting in the wings and ready to take the job if Tuchel is sacked, with Bild even reporting that the self-proclaimed Special One has started taking German lessons.

Mourinho has rather famously won titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain and has always been eager to add a Bundesliga crown to his glittering CV.

The 61-year-old was most recently manager of Roma but was dismissed in the middle of January after two-and-a-half years at the club.

When he left Rome, the side were in ninth place in the Serie A table but under replacement Daniele De Rossi they have risen up to fifth place and are in contention for a place in the Champions League.

Mourinho is believed to have ‘flirted’ with the Bayern job in the past, while club legend Bastian Schweinsteiger previously revealed that the Portuguese coach had inundated him with questions about the Bundesliga.

Speaking in 2019, Schweinsteiger said: ‘I can imagine Mourinho in Germany. He was always asking me about Bayern and the Bundesliga.

‘During our away games, there was always Bundesliga on TV [on the team bus]. He really knew every single player, even from the smaller teams.’

For now, Bayern’s hierarchy are publicly and privately sticking by Tuchel, but a few more results like Saturday’s defeat to Leverkusen could see them start to explore alternatives.

Should Mourinho get the Bayern job, he would be reunited with former Tottenham players Harry Kane and Eric Dier.
