Activate the sleepless city

“Light up” the night economy

Activate the sleepless city

People’s Committee of Hai Chau District (Da Nang City) has just issued a plan to pilot the program Da Nang at night – Danang by Night, which is scheduled to launch a pilot from April 30. Accordingly, the city government will build a pilot night economic organization in the area limited by 4 roads: Binh Minh 4 – Binh Minh 10 – Bach Dang and September 2; diversifying night activities, mobilizing the Helio center and service establishments on Bach Dang route, extending the operation time and upgrading the convenience of Pham Hong Thai, Le Thanh Nghi night food street … In addition, the large venues will organize more entertainment activities, culinary shows, shows to serve guests at night. Along with that, the Department of Tourism of Da Nang City is coordinating with other departments and branches to research to allow domestic tourism ships to operate up to 24 hours; increase the operation time of museums, tourist attractions to 21 hours; increased activities on two banks of the Han River

The activation of the night economy has the meaning of activating the tourism service economy back to its new normal state. According to Prof. Ha Ton Vinh, Chairman and General Director of Stellar Management.

These are the first steps to concretize Da Nang’s determination to light up the night economy, after applying for a pilot mechanism for night economic development to 24 hours daily for tourism development, from the end of 2019. Lanh Da Nang director hopes that the pilot organization of the Da Nang program at night will exploit well the advantages and potential of the city in general and Hai Chau district in particular to not only form new and different tourism products , increase the experience, serve the people and tourists, but also start the night economic development to contribute to the recovery of tourism activities after the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Also choosing the upcoming April 30 – May 1 ceremony as a lever to restore tourism, Phu Quoc is being evaluated as the hottest destination of this holiday season when Vingroup Group announced the official opening of the entertainment resort Phu Quoc United Center on April 21 with an area of more than 1,000 hectares. In which Grand World – “the city does not sleep” owns busy commercial streets, festivals, and entertainment non-stop 24 hours / day. Like Da Nang, both the Phu Quoc government and the Vingroup Group believe that Phu Quoc United Center, when put into operation, will lay the foundation for Vietnam’s night-economy development in general and mark the step forward, bringing Phu Quoc to become a new international destination on the world tourist map.

Not only tourist capitals such as Da Nang, Phu Quoc consider activating the “sleepless” mode, many provinces and cities such as Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Ben Tre, Can Tho, Kien Giang, Nghe An … or even highland localities such as Lai Chau, Tuyen Quang are also promoting the implementation of the night market model with methodical and professional strategies.

Activate the sleepless city

Activating the night economy to create a not small source of income, contributing to economic recovery after the pandemic

“Doping dose” revives the economy after the epidemic

A successful night-travel product can become a lever that boosts local economies. For example, the night economy generates £ 66 billion (about $ 90 billion) in annual revenue, making it the UK’s 5th largest economic sector. Night economy contributed more than 10 billion USD to sleepless city of New York (USA); And that is also the “emergency solution” that China has deployed since mid-2019 when the country’s economy has low economic growth due to the impact of the trade war with the US. The Chinese government has issued a policy to promote the night economy (directly supporting service and business activities from 8:00 am to 6:00 am the next morning) in some major cities. After that, the Government of Vietnam also requested relevant ministries and localities to actively study this solution.

“The night economy has potentially startling development benefits. For example, cities normally focus on staying awake during the day and sleeping at night. If you scale up the night economy, you reduce urban pressure. 1 / 3 stay up at night, 2/3 stay awake during the day, then the city is also lighter, less stressful, and civilized cities always have night economy, urban underground, and underground roads , naturally, the city will clear up completely “, according to Assoc.Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Thien.

After certain and effective steps in the anti-epidemic process, Vietnam is promoting many measures to transform these achievements into competitive advantages to anticipate tourism and economic development. The “vaccine passport” program is being activated, the Aviation Department has submitted detailed plans to open the sky, airlines are ready to re-start international commercial routes … If deployed successful, the night economy is expected to be a lever to help Vietnam’s tourism break through.

Prof. Ha Ton Vinh, President and General Director of Stellar Management International Education and Consultancy Group, agrees when Vietnam activates night economic activities to welcome tourists after Covid-19. Expressing impatience, he said that it is necessary to do it quickly and do it right away for the business to restart, the economic activity of tourism services is active again. The activation of the night economy has the meaning of activating the tourism service economy back to its new normal state.

According to Professor Ha Ton Vinh, while European countries have to block and isolate for the 4th time, the activities of Vietnam are still peaceful. The night economy will be a “lightning” solution to the post-Covid-19 opportunity for Vietnam’s tourism to break through, develop class and become more sustainable in the future. In addition, the local people, the office workers … really need to rest, relax and play in the context of being “tied up” because of epidemics over the past year. Therefore, the night economy must be activated earlier to serve domestic and foreign visitors living and working in Vietnam. This is also a great source of income to activate services, trade, and recover the economy after a pandemic

Associate Professor – Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Central Institute of Economics, emphasized that it is necessary to understand that the night economy is an economy that has different operating mechanisms, different resources, and different laws, not just one economic activities were extended, shifting to daytime. Therefore, to develop the night-time economy, it is necessary to build its model and contents carefully, and must have a very methodical, modern and classy manners.

“There is a need for land, manpower, technology, many specific factors such as light, noise, ensuring safety for visitors, investors must be allowed to do business overnight … different policies, suitable for the night economy, not just the available rules ”, Mr. Thien proposed.

Sharing the same point of view, Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Trong Thinh (Academy of Finance), thinks that forming the night economy needs to start with policies. No “curfew” time for nightlife activities. However, it is necessary to have a well-planned plan into a separate area to serve tourists rather than to develop spontaneously. If you delay, the tourist cities of neighboring countries will attract all visitors, and the country will be surpassed by other tourist cities.
