Defence Minister Richard Marles has outlined how the war in Ukraine has placed pressure on the “global defence industry in producing missiles”.
This comes amid the government’s review of Australia’s defence policy amid the ongoing global tensions.
Mr Marles said he wants Australia to have “access to the required quantity of new long-range missiles”.
He therefore plans for the “establishment of a domestic guided weapons and ordinance manufacturing capability”.
He said the government is committing $16-21 billion over the next decade to see this through.
Mr Marles said measures to grow “Australia’s domestic industrial base” include the plan to “commence manufacturing missiles in Australia starting from next year”.
