Aaron Judge resting versus Rangers ends slim Triple Crown hopes

ARLINGTON, Texas — There was a chant of “We want Judge” from the sparse crowd at Globe Life Field in the top of the ninth inning on Wednesday, but the new American League home run champion didn’t make an appearance in a 4-2 Yankees loss to the Rangers to end the regular season.

“Not today,’’ Aaron Boone said. “He got plenty of them all year and hopefully we’ve got a lot left in the postseason.”

“I made my case,’’ Judge said of playing one more game.

Prior to the finale, Boone said he contemplated putting Judge in the lineup only because the slugger still had a slim chance of winning the AL Triple Crown.

But with Judge’s batting average at .311 and Minnesota’s Luis Arraez at .315, the manager opted to go with his initial decision and sit Judge a day after he hit his 62nd homer of the season to break Roger Maris’ 61-year-old AL and franchise record.

Aaron Judge did not play in the Yankees’ game against the Rangers on Wednesday.

So Judge watched from the bench for the first time since Aug. 3.

Like the rest of the team, he’ll focus on the postseason — even before reflecting on his new home run record, something he said he hasn’t done yet.

“It was an early game [Wednesday], so I just came right here,’’ Judge said of whether No. 62 had sunk in. “The [regular] season is over with and now we’ll get ready for the postseason. After the season, I’ll reflect on everything.”

Asked if he wanted his historical season to be capped off with a World Series title, he replied, “I think historical or not, you want to finish with that. The regular season is just getting you prepared for the postseason. Now we’ve got the regular season out of the way.”

Giancarlo Stanton called Judge’s season “incredible.”

Everything to know about Aaron Judge and his chase for the home run record:

  • Aaron Judge hits 62nd home run to break Roger Maris’ record
  • Listen to Michael Kay and John Sterling call Aaron Judge’s 62nd home run
  • Aaron Judge’s parents celebrate his historic 62nd home run
  • All of Aaron Judge’s home runs this season

It was Stanton who was in the on-deck circle for Judge’s final home run of the season on Tuesday night.

“He gives you something to watch every night,’’ Stanton said. “I’m happy he got it done [Tuesday] and could relax today and not have to bring it into [Wednesday’s final game] and be relieved. It was amazing to have the best seat in the house for it.”

The show will continue on Tuesday in The Bronx, with Game 1 of the ALDS.

“Everybody in this room is excited,’’ Judge said. “Once we clinched the division in Toronto, we were looking ahead at what was to come. Now it’s time to rest up and hope we get some guys back from the IL. This is the fun part of the year.”

Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge sit on the Yankees bench.

It comes after an eventful regular season for Boone and the Yankees.

“Hopefully, there are still a couple chapters to write,’’ Boone said. “That’s the hope. Now, we have that opportunity to go chase that.”

The Yankees won their first AL East title since 2019 and locked up the No. 2 seed in the American League.

Asked what stood out to him the most this year, Boone said, “I think what Aaron has done shoots to the top of the list. To witness the season he put out there, we’ll be talking about it forever.”

After Wednesday, the Yankees will be off Thursday and then set themselves up for the ALDS with workouts at the Stadium.

They’ll face either the AL Central champion Guardians or wild-card Rays in the ALDS.
