Lucknow: During an exclusive interview with Times Now Navabharta in the Navbharat Navnirman Manch event, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav addressed the recent Rajya Sabha elections setback. Despite attempts at strategic alliances, Yadav faced an unexpected setback as certain party MLAs engaged in “cross-voting”. Drawing a culinary analogy to illustrate the situation, the SP leader remarked that while their party’s catering resembled that of the Taj, the BJP’s dessert offerings, like jalebi and gulab jamun, may have been more enticing, alluding to the defections from his party.

“If you are doing so much work, then why are you poaching legislators from other parties? You should also give an account of how much package you have offered to these legislators. Legislators are being sold. Today BJP bought them, tomorrow we will buy them again. Whoever is being sold, when the need arises, we will buy them,” the SP chief said.

For the unversed, the BJP secured eight out of the ten contested seats in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh. Among the challenges faced by the SP, two MLAs signalled potential defection by citing their “inner voice” and expressing allegiance to “Lord Ram”, hinting at potential cross-voting that could benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Rajya Sabha polls.

Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the Samajwadis have pioneered development. He criticised the government’s handling of various issues, including the leak of examination papers and the ongoing projects. He questioned the authenticity of the developmental work claimed by the current government, highlighting issues such as airport construction and land acquisition from farmers.

On the matter of leaked examination papers, Yadav criticised the government’s inability to prevent such incidents, pointing out multiple instances of paper leaks during their tenure. He also addressed the issue of defections, remarking on the cynical attitude towards politicians and the politics of buying and selling MLAs.

Furthermore, he criticised the government’s priorities, highlighting the failures in various sectors and questioning the authenticity of the claimed developments. He emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns of the people and the need for transparency in governance.

Akhilesh Yadav’s comments come amid growing political tensions and allegations of unethical practices in politics in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha polls.
