not rohit sharma! india to have a new t20i captain after 2023 world cup: report

India will host Australia in a five-match T20I series from November 23 to December 3 across different centres in the country. With the 2024 T20 World Cup set to be played in June, the series is of utmost importance for the Men in Blue as they are yet to ink on their first-choice players in the shortest format.

Rohit Sharma, who is still the all-format captain of Team India, looks set to be rested for the series. Cricbuzz has reported that India will have a new T20I captain for the five fixtures. Suryakumar Yadav has been reportedly given the charge of the team.

Hardik Pandya would have led the team but he is out due to an ankle injury. This will be the first time when Suryakumar will lead the Men in Blue. He joined the leadership group early in 2023 and was Hardik’s deputy in the T20I series that they played before Ireland series.

There is still no official word on Rohit and Virat Kohli’s future with the T20I team. They haven’t played a T20I since the 2022 World Cup. A clear word on their future should be out when the BCCI announces the squad for the South Africa T20I series.

The report in Cricbuzz adds that Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the T20I series whereas Prasidh Krishna is part of the team. Prasidh made his T20I debut in the Ireland series. He replaced Hardik in the WC squad after he was ruled out but didn’t get a game.

The first T20I of the series will be played on November 23 in Vizag. Thiruvananthapuram will host the second T20I on November 26. Guwahati, Nagpur and Hyderabad will host the next three T20Is on November 28, December 1 and 3, respectively.

Team India will fly to South Africa for a full-fledged series after the fifth T20I. The India tour of SA includes 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 2 Test matches.
