MANILA, Philippines — Six police officers were arrested for allegedly extorting money from a curfew violator in Sta. Cruz, Manila on Thursday, authorities reported yesterday.
Patrolmen Kenneth Cordova and Danny Rangaig; Corporals Johndee Toledo, Jigie Azores and Kevin Villanueva, and S/Sgt. Jeffrey Meija were disarmed following the incident.
Jericho Laniog, a Sangguniang Kabataan chairman, accused the suspects of extortion, according to the Manila Police District (MPD).
The suspects, who are assigned with the Padre Algue police community precinct, arrested Laniog and his companion for a curfew violation in Baranyay 314.
Laniog said the police personnel allegedly demanded cash in exchange for his release.
Laniog said he pawned his motorcycle and jewelry to raise P47,000 for his release.
Charges of robbery and extortion will be filed against the police officers, according to MPD spokesman Capt. Philipp Ines.Internet Explorer Channel Network
