$50k of cocaine seized in Sydney's east on first post-lockdown weekend

Asia's Tech News Daily

Seventeen people have been charged and $50,000 worth of cocaine seized in a police operation in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on the weekend.

In the city’s first weekend out of COVID-19 lockdown, police launched Operation Express in the eastern suburbs across the Friday and Saturday evenings.

Police allegedly seized 94.2 grams of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $50,000, and $35,280 in cash.

A total of 17 people have been charged with drug-related and proceeds of crime offences.

“With the reopening of licensed venues and the weather warming up, we are expecting lots of people out and about in the Eastern Suburbs, so police will be out to make sure everyone stays safe,” Eastern Suburbs Commander Detective Superintendent Martin Fileman said.

“This weekend there was a focused effort targeting anti-social behaviour – and thanks to the work of our officers – $50,000 worth of cocaine is now off our streets and 17 people have been charged.”

Among those arrested was a 56-year-old man from Bankstown, who was driving a taxi in Double Bay when he was stopped and his car searched.

Police allegedly found $8800 in cash in the car’s centre console, and 34 bags of cocaine totalling 20.9 grams.

Another taxi was stopped just after 5pm on Saturday after it travelled only a short distance between picking up and dropping off a passenger.

Police spoke to another passenger in the taxi, a 21-year-old Austral man, and searched him and the car.

They allegedly found 27 bags of cocaine totalling 17.7 grams, and $8040 in cash.

At 10.40pm on Saturday, police stopped a car in Bondi after they allegedly saw a man withdraw cash at an ATM, before getting into a car and quickly getting out again.

The car was searched and 14 bags of cocaine, $8000 cash and a knife were confiscated.

A 24-year-old Matraville man was charged.

At 11.30pm on Saturday, police in Double Bay stopped a 36-year-old woman from St Marys and searched her car.

They allegedly found a soft drink can with a false lid that held 15 bags of cocaine, and a plastic container with a further 20 bags.

A total of $3000 in cash was also seized.
