Best ways to debloat fast: peppermint tea, yoga and more

Undoing your jeans. Lying horizontally clutching a large hot water bottle. Feeling like you’re going to pop. Bloating puts us through our paces, doesn’t it?

Many struggle with functional bloating, meaning bloating not explained by an organic and more serious medical condition. It’s no secret that the issue is hugely frustrating. Not only does bloating cause discomfort, but it can also affect our confidence. If you have ever ditched the LBD you were planning to wear for your hot date for a pair of stretchy trousers, you’re not alone.

Women are more prone to develop functional bloating due to their hormonal physiology (aka the period bloat) but men can also encounter bloating. Those who suffer from various health conditions or lead an unhealthy lifestyle are more likely to bloat and, in turn, face unwanted aggravation at meal times.

What causes bloating?

Dr Crudeli notes some factors that contribute to functional bloating. These include:

  • Eating processed and pre-prepared food
  • Eating too much fibre
  • Eating too much food containing fructose
  • Too much alcohol
  • Drinking fizzy drinks
  • Not exercising enough
  • Being constipated
  • Physiological hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, perimenopause and menopause
  • Underlying IBS eating too quickly
  • Change in your normal routine

Regardless of what you think may have caused your bloating, it’s important to discuss your symptoms with your doctor in case they point to a more serious health issue. These conditions might include coeliac diseases, food intolerance, gastrointestinal or gynaecological malignancies, hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and diabetes.

Is it possible to debloat quickly?

No, sadly not. As much as we’d love for there to be some magic potion to depuff our tummies, that isn’t yet possible. However, there are a few things that can stop reducing bloating according to Dr Crudeli.

  • Do not overload on fibre (25-30 grams per day max)
  • Exercise daily to help your gut move and reinforce your abdominal muscles, yoga is very helpful too
  • Avoid processed food, pre-packed food and delivery food as much as possible
  • Eat slowly
  • Limit your fruit portions to 2-3 per day
  • Keep your bowel habits regular and avoid constipation
  • Do not exceed with alcohol and keep your alcohol intake to the lowest possible (max 1-2 units per week)
  • Avoid fizzy drinks
  • Do not over-hydrate to avoid fluid retention (30 mls of water/clear fluids per kg of body weight)
  • Herbal teas, especially peppermint tea or capsules, can help with soothing your gut
