The sight of Erling Haaland arriving at Manchester City will send tremors of terror throughout the Premier League – and perhaps to his team-mates as well – as the champions make their statement signing of the summer.

Pep Guardiola’s search for a new No9 looks to finally be over after the champions agreed a £51million deal to sign the Norwegian sensation from Borussia Dortmund. The 21-year-old is expected to sign a five-year deal worth £375,000-a-week as he looks to bring his knack for scoring goals to England after finding the net 85 times in just 88 appearances in Germany.

But as well as some envious Manchester United fans, not everyone at the Etihad will be quite as joyful about Haaland’s arrival in Manchester. Competition for places was already rife at Eastlands and the chances of dislodging Haaland from the starting XI look increasingly slim, with some squad members facing a challenge to keep their City careers on track.

Mirror Football has taken a look at five losers from City's capture of Haaland.

Gabriel Jesus

Global Tech News Daily

The obvious loser from the Haaland deal is Gabriel Jesus, even if the Brazilian may not necessarily see it that way. Guardiola has entrusted the striker to lead his three-man attack recently and he has responded with six goals in his last five appearances.

But the 25-year-old has rarely looked like a player who will score every week in the Premier League and it is partly the reason why Jesus was shifted out to the right flank when did he play. At other points in the season, he was a mere bystander on the bench.

Global Tech News Daily

Haaland’s arrival is only likely to put his place under threat and after six years with City, it may be time to move on. Arsenal and Juventus are thought to be keen and that could offer Jesus a route out of the club for more regular football.

Have Your Say! Which player should Manchester City sell to make room for Erling Haaland? Comment below.

Phil Foden

For the majority of the season, Phil Foden has fitted into the role of a false nine with the energy and creativity that Guardiola would have demanded. But City’s style of play will inevitably need to be tweaked to fit Haaland’s style of play, perhaps lessening Foden’s role in the side.

Of course, the 21-year-old is as versatile as attackers come and can play anywhere across the front three. And the English starlet, with 14 goals and 13 assists in all competitions has proved he is a regular member of the side now, so his place won’t be under threat.

There is every chance he could link up to form a devastating partnership with his towering new colleague. But with his signing, Foden’s role in the side may have to be altered to squeeze him into the side.

Raheem Sterling

Like Jesus, Raheem Sterling may seen the signing of Haaland as a threat to his future in Manchester. Now entering his peak years at 27, Sterling needs to play weekly and the trouble is that Guardiola may not be able to guarantee that now that he has a striker who will surely play every game he is fit for.

The England international has hit 16 goals in all competitions this season for City, proving his importance to Guardiola. But with Foden’s rise to prominence and attacking positions at a premium, Sterling may feel this is the best time to assess his options.

Speculation linking him with Arsenal refuses to go away and with is contract expiring in 2023, Sterling could see Haaland’s arrival as an indicator that times are changing at the Etihad. Don’t be surprised if he makes another big-money move this summer.

Julian Alvarez

If City had always planned to sign Haaland, then acquiring Julian Alvarez from River Plate in January made little sense other than to cash in on his potential. The 21-year-old will join up with his new team-mates at the end of the season after being loaned back to River following his £18m switch.

Inevitable comparisons have been made to Sergio Aguero, but the jury is out on whether the striker is ready to make that step up yet after only playing in the Argentinian Primera Division. A loan to a European club appears to be the most likely option for Alvarez, as he may not favour sitting on the bench just to play in cup games. But already, it seems like his long-term City career could be in doubt.

Liam Delap

Aside from a handful of substitute appearances, chances at City have come far and few between for academy graduate Liam Delap, the son of former Southampton and Stoke player Rory. The teenager would suffice as a backup option if Haaland were to get injured, although that could depend on whether Alvarez is retained by the club for next season.

Still only 19, there are high hopes for him at the club. But at this stage in his career, he needs regular football and may seek a loan to a Championship club or beyond.
