Denmark proclaims new king as Queen Margrethe signs historic abdication

NEW DELHI: Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has signed her abdication, making way for her eldest son, King Frederik X, to assume the throne. 83-year-old queen’s decision to voluntarily relinquish the throne is a historic moment, as she becomes the first Danish monarch to do so in nearly 900 years.

The abdication took place on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, located in the Danish capital. Margrethe’s formal signing of the abdication occurred during a state council meeting with the Danish Cabinet, automatically making 55-year-old Frederik the new monarch of Denmark.

The queen cited health issues as the reason for her abdication, having undergone major back surgery in February last year. Margrethe’s announcement of her decision to step down on New Year’s Eve came as a surprise, as it was expected that she would continue to reign until the end of her days, as per Danish monarchy tradition.

This voluntary abdication is a rare occurrence in Danish history, with the last such resignation taking place in 1146 when King Erik III Lam stepped down to enter a monastery.

Margrethe’s abdication takes place exactly 52 years after she ascended the throne following the death of her father, King Frederik IX.

Unlike in the United Kingdom, Denmark does not have a coronation ceremony. Instead, the prime minister formally proclaimed Frederik as king from Christiansborg Palace.

With Margrethe’s abdication, Denmark will now have two queens. Margrethe will retain her title, while Frederik’s wife, who hails from Australia, will become Queen Mary. Their eldest son, 18-year-old Prince Christian, will assume the role of crown prince and heir to the throne.
