Prince Harry was forced to stay in a hotel as aides reportedly worried they would “never get rid of him” if he lodged at Sandringham while visiting the King.

The Duke of Sussex is said to be open to taking a temporary role back in the fold to help his father while Charles III undergoes treatment for cancer.

Having arrived back from the US earlier in February, the prince came to Clarence House for a short meeting but was told to book a hotel rather than stay with his father at the Norfolk estate – according to the Sun.

A Royal insider told the Sun: “Harry came over to see his father, expecting to go to Sandringham. But instead he was asked to be at Clarence House and was restricted to 30 minutes.

“The fear was that if he went to Sandringham they would never get rid of him.”

It is thought to be the first time that the prince would have seen his father alone since the Queen died in 2022 and it was understood he had wanted to share a heart to heart with his dad.

Prince Harry has since returned to North America to continue his activities with his wife and children.

He has been promoting the Invictus Games in Vancouver this week while he and wife Meghan Markle have relaunched their own website, sussex.com.

The new website used a royal coat of arms in what some critics claimed amounted to cashing in on their royal connections. The pair are no longer working royals after taking a step back from duties in 2020.

A spokesman for the couple said: “We’ve heard time and time again that certain opportunities are make or break for the couple. They’re still here.

“They’re still working and pursuing what they believe in, despite constantly being challenged and criticised. This couple will not be broken.”
