300,000 parents receive a refund of excess paid childcare contribution

300,000 parents receive a refund of excess paid childcare contribution

Nearly 300,000 parents will receive more money back as compensation for overpaid personal contribution for childcare. Parents were asked to continue paying this contribution during the various closures of the childcare due to corona and were compensated for this, but the almost 300,000 parents received too little in return. They will still receive a few tens of euros and in some cases more than a hundred euros back.

The exact compensation scheme has yet to be worked out. Outgoing State Secretary Dennis Wiersma (Social Affairs) writes in a letter to the House of Representatives that the allowance is “grosso modo” equal to the personal contribution paid. According to him, the previous arrangement was quickly created and simple in implementation, but did not work out well for everyone. He still wants to accommodate parents who were bothered by this.

Emergency care for parents with a crucial profession

Childcare had to close several times due to corona. First, the reception centers closed from March 16 to May 10 in 2020, and later again from December 16 that year to February 7, 2021. The out-of-school care remained closed for longer in both periods. By allowing parents to continue to pay their own contribution, the sectors still had enough money to provide emergency care to children whose parents held crucial professions.
