3 Things We Learned From Yankees-Astros Series
After losing the series finale to the Houston Astros, the New York Yankees have finished a successful six-game homestand with a 5-1 record. Despite their loss, New York is still in a good position in the standings. They just trail the Baltimore Orioles by half a game for first place. In addition, the team is also 7-3 in their last 10 games. Right now, it feels good to be a Yankees fan by the way that things are trending at the moment.
Here is what we learned from the Yankees’ recent series against the Astros.
1. Juan Soto Owns Astros Pitching
Without question, it feels like Juan Soto is already an MVP candidate after the recent performance he has put on display against the Astros.. Entering the series Soto was slashing .577/.633/.846 along with 1.479 OPS and 9 RBIs. He also now leads the American League in a ton of categories, inclduing hits, RBI, OPTS and wRC+. He is worth every penny this year thus far. It seems like the Yankees have found their answer to beat their Kryptonite.
2. The pitching is Decent Enough
Indeed, the Yankees pitching was decent again against their bitter rivals. While Kyle Tucker was the lone Astro who did damage, New York was able to keep everyone else in check. They found ways to slow top Astros hitters such as Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman, and Jeremy Pena.
The one guy who continues to be the storyline of this pitching staff Luis Gil, who is looking like the ace the Yankees want him to be. Gil probably will end up as an AL Comeback Player of The Year candidate if he keeps up this trend.
Last but not least Carlos Rodon is finally starting to look like the strong pitcher he once was before coming to New York.
3. Aaron Judge Starting To Heating Up
After starting the season cold, the captain has finally started to heat up.
He was the one player aside from Soto who did the most damage to the Astros’ pitchers. In his last 10 games, he has now posted a batting average of .314 along with 11 hits, 3 home runs, 7 RBIs and 7 runs.
Judge is trending in the right direction, and if he keeps this up he could find himself in the AL MVP conversation alongside Soto.
