With the Philadelphia Flyers officially holding the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, speculation is starting to trickle in over who they could select.
There’s no shortage of talent that could help bolster this rebuilding Flyers team, and multiple names have come in at the 12th pick in mock drafts, creating the big question of, “Who would be the best choice for Philadelphia?”
A center from Saskatchewan who captained Team Canada to a gold medal in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup last summer, Berkly Catton is a player that many teams have kept tabs on.
Originally projected as at least a top-five prospect, the surge of ability in his peers has caused his stock to drop a bit—and potentially right into the Flyers’ laps.
An agile skater who can inject an incredible amount of life into a powerplay, Catton has also displayed excellent passing and awareness, able to find ways to distract defenses long enough to generate some truly dangerous scoring opportunities. He also has proven himself to have a solid defensive game, winning puck battles with skill and timing rather than pure physical strength.
Praised for his hockey IQ, creativity, and ability to be a “massive threat” in transition, Catton ticks a lot of boxes for what the Flyers value in their offense. His “high-end edge work and quickness…combined with good hands and vision and a pass-first mentality” all fit in quite nicely with the stylistic direction the offense looks to be headed in.
For many, the biggest drawback to Catton is his size, coming in at just under five-foot-eleven and weighing 170 pounds. However, having just turned 18 back in January, he still has plenty of time to bulk up a little more. Plus, the Flyers aren’t a hulking team as it is, so Catton’s size wouldn’t make him stick out all that much.
With the Flyers needing some young reinforcements in the center position, and with Danny Briere not afraid to go for undersized players, Catton would be an excellent acquisition—and possibly quite the steal.
