MANILA, Philippines: THE Commission on Elections inched closer to its target of three million new voters as it recorded more than 2.5 million registrants as of May 2, 2024.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said over the weekend that as of May 2, the commission has processed 2,548,324 applications.
“We will definitely surpass our three million target,” Garcia said, pointing out that the registration period will end on September 30.
“We’re going to the remotest areas to emphasize the Comelec is not selective in its registration drive, because all of us have the right to vote and equal opportunity to register,” he added.
Comelec spokesman John Rex Laudiangco attributed the success of the ongoing registration to the Comelec’s massive information dissemination campaign and other proactive measures that made it easier for the public, particularly the youth who would vote for the first time in the 2025 midterm polls, to register.
Based on Comelec data, as of May 2, Calabarzon or Region IV-A had the highest number of registrants at 466,768, followed by the National Capital Region or Metro Manila with 378,553, Central Luzon or Region III, 295,635, Central Visayas or Region VII, 181,283 and Davao Region or Region XI, 140,548.
