Weather maps show snow blitzing Lancashire on Friday as 'colder Arctic air' sweeps in

More snow has been predicted for Lancashire for Friday as ‘colder Arctic air’ sweeps in.

The Met Office has warned of more flurries of snow tomorrow (March 1) with up to 10cm of the white stuff falling on higher ground. The latest weather maps from WXChart shows a wall of snow moving across Wales overnight on Thursday before hitting Lancashire by 6am on Friday.

It will cover the whole of the county with central and eastern areas including Preston, Chorley, Leyland, Blackburn, Hyndburn, Rossendale and Burnley showing darker shades of purple, indicating heavier snow. Several centimetres could fall in some places between 6am and 9am.

The snow is expected to ease by midday but there will then still be further scattered snow showers for the remainder of Friday afternoon. In an update on X on Wednesday, formerly Twitter, the Met Office wrote: “Weather systems crossing the UK today are bringing mild conditions for most.

“But as they clear away, this will be replaced by colder Arctic air for the end of the week. Some of us may even see some sleet and snow by Friday.”

The agency also posted a ‘snow risk’ map showing the areas across the UK that could see snow on Friday and early Saturday. According to the Met Office, the north west of England, Wales, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland could see 5-10cm of snow on ‘mainly grassy areas’ above 250-300 metres.

There is also a low risk of snow falling in lower levels. North Scotland could also see accumulations of up to 5cm in areas above 300m.

The Met Office forecast for tonight reads: “A few heavy showers this evening, mainly across Cumbria. Otherwise, clear spells developing and turning frosty with perhaps some icy patches.

“Rain and hill snow arriving by the morning. Cold. Minimum temperature -2 °C”

The snow will ease by 3pm on Friday

The forecast for Friday states: “Breezy with rain and snow moving north during the morning. The snow may bring disruption in places, mainly over higher ground.

“Drier conditions spreading north later and winds easing. Cold. Maximum temperature 6 °C.”

The outlook for Saturday to Monday says: “A changeable weekend with showers possible at times, wintry over higher ground but also brighter spells. Winds easing with overnight frosts. Dry at first on Monday, wetter and windier later.”
