Colin Farrell attends the Photo Call for Apple TV+’s “Sugar” in Los Angeles
Colin Farrell is set to star in a tense Netflix film following a high-stakes gambler lying low in Macau as his debts catch up with him. The film, titled The Ballad of a Small Player, will be directed by Edward Berger.
The script will be adapted by Rowan Joffe and is based on the novel by Lawrence Osborne, Deadline reports. As the gambler, played by Farrell, attempts to escape his troubles, he meets a kindred spirit who might prove to be the answer to his problems.
The novel was released in 2014 and follows the English gambler in Macau who passes himself off as a runaway Lord. The book is part ghost story and part psychological thriller.
The novel has proven to be a smash hit since its release. It was included in the 100 Notable Books of 2014 list in The New York Times.
It has not been reported how closely the film will reflect the story in the book. A release date is yet to be announced as production is expected to start later this year.
Director Berger is best known for his work on the Oscar-winning film All Quiet on the Western Front. In 2023, the film beat An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) to take home the Best International Feature Film award.
Colin Farrell seems to be keeping busy with projects that are due for release in the coming months. He is currently starring in the Apple TV+ drama series Sugar.
He will also appear in The Penguin, a spin-off series that sees him reprising his role as the iconic Batman villain. He will also star opposite Margot Robbie in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
Farrell became an Oscar nominee in 2023 for his stand-ou role in The Banshees of Inisherin. He has been away from our screens for some time since then but it seems that we will be seeing plenty more of the Dublin native in the coming months.
Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter has made an early assessment in the Emmys race and has put Farrell among the “frontrunners” in the Best Actor in a Drama Series category for the detective mystery, Sugar.
