12-hour electricity supply disruption to affect parts of Cape Town

The City of Cape Town says a necessary electricity supply interruption due to planned maintenance will be carried out in parts of Durban on Saturday, 18 May or 25 May.

There will be no electricity from 8:00 – 20:00.

ELECTRICITY SUPPLY DISRUPTION IN PARTS OF CAPE TOWN

The metro municipality said the maintenance will be carried out on Saturday, 18 May, from 8:00 – 20:00 or on an alternate date of Saturday, 25 May also from 8:00 – 20:00.

The municipality said due to the complex nature of the infrastructure work, supply will be interrupted and the time of restoration may be delayed by a few hours.

“Our teams will work as quickly as possible to complete all upgrades within the 8:00 to 20:00 communicated time. The maintenance work ensures a reliable electricity supply for residents in the areas,” the City of Cape Town said.

POWER COULD BE RESTORED ANY TIME

The City of Cape Town said electricity supply could be restored at any time and customers must please treat all electrical installations as live for the full duration of the interruption.

“Residents are encouraged to switch off appliances as a precaution and to avoid damage caused by power surges when the power comes back on,” the City of Cape Town said.

24-HOUR DISRUPTION ON TUESDAY

In addition, the City of Cape Town also announced that its water and sanitation directorate teams will also undertake maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements.

The following areas will be affected by the water disruption:

Parts of Hout Bay (Lower Baviaanskloof and surrounds) – The City of Cape Town said the newly installed high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline will be connected to the existing water supply network along Baviaanskloof Road from 8:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday, 7 May.

“This will ensure the completion and optimal operation of the newly installed pipelines along Baviaanskloof Road. The water supply will be shut off during this period to enable the work to be done safely. Residents need to please store sufficient water for domestic use,” the municipality said.

Haasendal, Jacarandas, Jagtershof and Zevenhof – Likewise, the 450mm diameter water supply pipeline to the Haasendal, Jacarandas and Jagtershof areas, will be upgraded. This involves replacing a T-piece and installing a control valve to minimise the impact of future water supply disruptions in these areas.

The metro municipality said this will result in the disruption of the water supply to these areas from 20:00 on Tuesday, 7 May, overnight until 20:00 on Wednesday, 8 May. Water tankers will be made available where required.
