Cars have been left submerged by floodwaters with drivers plucked from their stricken vehicles as a deluge of rain battered Perth.

A severe thunderstorm barrelled into the city from the north on Friday afternoon, with heavy rain and hail falling.

The storm first hit Kingsley, Two Rocks and Wangara at lunchtime, Bureau of Meterology spokesman Daniel Hayes told WA Today.

Cars have been left submerged by floodwaters with drivers plucked from their stricken vehicles as a deluge of rain battered Perth

Pinjar and Yanchep were next in the firing line, with Butler, Neerabup, Guilderton, Joondalup, Tapping and Wanneroo all likely to be hit by the storm and left prone to flash flooding.

As much as 50mm of rain fell in some parts of the city, which up until now had only registered 8.4mm of rain since the start of the year.

An official emergency warning has been issued for 200km of coastline from Jurien Bay to Hillarys – and as far inland as Gingin.

Drivers have been warned to steer clear of deep water. Parts of the Mitchell Freeway northbound have been flooded.

More than 40 calls have been made to the SES due to the downpours, with some saying their homes have been flooded while others have reported hail damage.

Ocean Keys Shopping Centre in Clarkson had to close off part of the mall after water started cascading through the roof.
