'100 per cent orchestrated' - WTA chief Steve Simon confirms fresh email 'from Peng Shuai'

The WTA CEO and Chairman has confirmed he has received fresh correspondence purportedly from Peng Shuai, the tennis player many fear is being censored after making sexual abuse allegations against the former vice premier of China. It comes after Steve Simon suspended all WTA Tour events held in China over the handling of Peng’s allegations and safety, and has continued to demand that the former doubles world No 1 be able to speak free of censorship, and that her allegations are investigated.

Over a month ago, on November 2, Peng took to Weibo to accuse former vice premier Zang Gaoli in a lengthy post, also detailing a consensual on-off affair with the retired politician, dating back to 2011.

The post was removed within half an hour, while Zhang has not responded to the claims, and a spokesperson for Beijing’s foreign ministry denied all knowledge of the allegations when asked about the subject shortly after Peng published her post, saying: “I have not heard of it and it is not a diplomatic question.”

The two-time doubles Grand Slam champion had been ‘missing’ for more than two weeks after making the allegations, though has since been seen in photos and videos shared by Chinese state media, and allegedly told the president of the International Olympic Committee she was “safe and well” in a video call.

Despite accounts of Peng’s whereabouts, the WTA chief has remained concerned for her safety and freedom.

Steve Simon has been praised for remaining proactive since just days after Peng was first assumed to be missing after making the allegations.

The WTA CEO and Chairman continued to threated to remove all women’s tour events – including the prestigious year-end WTA Finals – from the country, and on Wednesday (December 1) confirmed all WTA tournaments in China had been suspended with immediate effect.

Simon has previously spoken of his attempts to get in touch with Peng but has been unable to do so, previously receiving an email that was also shared by Chinese state-affiliated media, which he said he did not believe was written by the 35-year-old.

Now, the boss of the women’s tennis tour has told CNN that he received a new email said to be from Peng on Thursday (December 2), which he believes is “100% orchestrated” like her previous communications.

“Well I would characterise [the emails] as orchestrated at this point in time,” the WTA chief said, appearing via video call.

“When you come out with the allegations that Peng did early in November, they were significant and they were detailed.

“And now to be receiving the emails and the correspondence from her that certainly are very – they’re just 100% orchestrated, and I do not think that they reflect what the allegations did and the true position. I can only imagine the range of emotions and feelings that she’s going through.”

Asked whether he had any form of independent contact to confirm whether Peng was “under duress or having to do what she’s told”, the CEO of the women’s tennis tour said the little information coming from China was “consistent” with censorship and orchestration.

Simon continued: “We don’t have a lot of contact coming out the region.

“Contact that we have had from the region has basically been consistent. She’s in Beijing, she’s fine, she’s not under no physical stress etc. Which is what we’ve seen in the videos and the pictures that we’ve seen.

“We just feel very strongly that this has certainly been orchestrated. It’s consistent with those that are very familiar with the region as to how these things are handled over there. It is fully expected.”

He also reiterated the demands he had previously communicated – asking for the French Open and Wimbledon doubles champion to be allowed to speak free of coercion and control, and for a full investigation into her allegations against Zhang.

The WTA CEO added: “And as you reflected before we have two principal points right now which is, we definitely want to confirm that Peng is available to speak without censorship or any pressures or any restrictions. And we do want a full and transparent investigation of these very serious allegations.”
