Johnson won’t be Chiefs coach next season, Kaizer Jnr reveals

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr has revealed the club will ‘definitely’ bring in a new coach next season and replace Cavin Johnson.

Amakhosi have been in the process of getting a new coach since sacking Molefi Ntseki in October. Cavin Johnson, who was in charge of their development programme, has since taken over on an interim basis.

The club have gone over nine years without silverware despite changing coaches eight times since 2015.

When asked if Kaizer Chiefs planned to replace Johnson, Motaung Jnr confirmed a new technical structure for next season.

“There is definitely,” Motaung Jnr was quoted on Times Live. “It’s a something we communicated from the onset — Cavin has stepped in on an interim basis and we’re [committed] to having a different technical structure next season.

Johnson to be replaced as Kaizer Chiefs coach

“I know we are focused on the next game and the next seven games and we have everything to play for. But yes, definitely the plans have long been in motion — we’ll be having a different technical structure next season.”

Kaizer Motaung Jnr also revealed Chiefs shortlisted several coaches since Johnson took over.

“Well, you know, it’s our shortlist but who makes that shortlist? From our side we’ve been preparing for a while now and at the appropriate time we’ll make the right announcements,” he said this week.

One of the coaches Amakhosi were interested in bringing was Pitso Mosimane. The 59-year-old mentor was heavily linked with a move to Chiefs but went to Saudi Arabia.

Another coach who was linked with the Soweto Giants is Nasreddine Nabi, but the deal apparently fell through.

Johnson has struggled for results lately with Kaizer Chiefs now fighting for top eight spot in the league.
