The most likely trade-up spots for the Chiefs in the 2024 NFL Draft's first round

The Kansas City Chiefs are going for their third straight Super Bowl, a feat that has never been done before in the NFL. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has a long track record of being aggressive in the draft. If he were to be aggressive in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, what teams would be the most likely targets?

For a potential trade up, there are several factors to consider. The first is simple: who are you trading up for? It’s very common for teams to jump a few picks for a player they love. However, it’s pretty rare to see a team make a large jump for anything but quarterback. The value just isn’t there for a team to trade numerous day 1 and 2 picks for any other position. Sorry, Marvin Harrison Jr. on the Chiefs probably isn’t happening.

Another factor to consider is the trade partner. There are lots of teams sick and tired of the Chiefs that don’t want to help them get another blue-chip talent. AFC contenders and division rivals likely aren’t picking up the phone for the Chiefs.

Lastly, what is the goal of the trade up? Is there a specific team that is likely to take a prospect before the Chiefs’ pick?

Seattle Seahawks, No. 16, Draft Value Differential: 410 points

By far the most aggressive move up the board could be with the Seahawks at No. 16. Moving halfway up the first round is no easy task but if the Chiefs wanted to be aggressive this could be a path.

The Seahawks have had numerous draft picks over the last few years from the Russel Wilson trade. However, they still have lots of holes on defense and could continue to focus on rebuilding that side of the ball with a number of picks. Maybe they think a project QB (Michael Penix or Bo Nix) could fall down the board some and they get to recoup draft value, too.

This trade also put the Chiefs in front of some key AFC rivals like the Bengals, Jaguars, and the Dolphins. All likely figure into the playoff picture for 2024. All of them also have needs at tackle too. The Chiefs could jump these teams and maybe still be within reach of one of the top tackles

Trade Targets: Troy Fautanu, Amarius Mims, or Brian Thomas Jr.

Los Angeles Rams, No. 19, Draft Value Differential: 285 points

After losing Aaron Donald to retirement the Rams have even more work to do on defense. The offense is exciting with lots of talent but there’s tons of work to do on the other side of the ball. A move back should still have them in range to take a defensive back like Kool-Aid McKinstry or Ennis Rakestraw and additional picks to improve that side of the ball. The Rams had a terrific draft last year partly because they had lots and lots of picks. Maybe they go back to that strategy.

For the Chiefs, this gets them in front of the Steelers, Dolphins, and Cowboys. All three teams could be a sneaky destination for the next receiver on the board. The Dolphins do have some glaring needs along the interior of the offensive line, but they desperately need a third option behind Hill and Waddle. The Cowboys have yet to extend Ceedee Lamb and have Brandin Cooks on a 1-year deal after releasing Michael Gallup. The Steelers’ second-best receiver behind George Pickens is Quez Watkins.

Trade Targets: Adonai Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, Ladd McConkey, or Tyler Guyton

Philadelphia Eagles, No. 22, Draft Value Differential:190 points

Howie Roseman is one of the most aggressive general managers in the NFL. He also doesn’t care that the Chiefs and Eagles just faced off in the Super Bowl. Roseman will do anything he believes can improve the roster, and he’s been a big proponent of trading down over the years.

The Eagles have made a lot of changes to their roster this offseason, but they still have a big need in the secondary. A move down the board should still leave a top 3 corner in play and more picks to target linebacker or safety depth.

This is another spot the Chiefs could look to jump up for the last wave of starting-level tackles or the last bit of the top receiver talent. Here they are jumping over whoever ends up trading with the Vikings for pick #23, the Cowboys, the Packers, and the Buccaneers. The Cowboys have a strong need at tackle and receiver and the Bucs and Packers are wild cards. They could go in numerous directions.

Trade targets: Adonai Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, Ladd McConkey, Tyler Guyton and Amarius Mims

Tampa Bay Buccaneers, No. 26, Draft Value Differential:110 points

The Bucs have quietly been one of the best drafting teams over the last decade. Their roster doesn’t have a glaring need, they historically have done well with trading down. General manager Jason Licht has plenty of equity with the organization after winning a playoff game a year after losing Tom Brady.

This slot could be useful for the Chiefs if they are looking to make a play for a defender they love who is falling. While tackle and receiver are obvious needs, there might not be a huge difference in that market 6 picks later. However, the Lions, Cardinals, and Ravens all about to pick could start a defensive run.

Trade Targets: Kool-Aid McKinstry, Jer’Zhan Newton, Darius Robinson and Copper DeJean

Arizona Cardinals, No. 27, Trade Value Differential: 90 points

The Cardinals might be the last best chance to jump over some contending teams who plan to stop the Chiefs’ reign in 2024.

The Cardinals being this low in the draft despite where they are in their team-building process is a little unique they’ve acquired lots of picks over the last year and maybe they want to keep that going. This would also be a slight move, meaning they aren’t probably missing out on a specific value given they just need good players. They can get some more draft picks and it doesn’t really matter if they trade with the Chiefs.

Kansas City has a chance to do it again to the Buffalo Bills. They could possibly leap over the Bills to grab a receiver they desperately need. This also is the last chance to jump ahead of the Ravens, Lions, and 49ers all teams hoping to see the Chiefs in February or January.

Trade Targets: Ladd McConkey, Adonai Mitchell, Kingsley Suamataia, and Tyler Guyton.
